No it was not in 84 the toleman it was pretty good by the standard of competition in 1984 the chassis was pretty good and the engine was ok-ish for time so a race like monaco where handling is more important than horsepower the toleman and you got to remember that Senna was very clever so he was able to use the machine to it’s fullest potential e.g. lowering the boost on the turbo engine for more handling but that being said Bellof in the Tyrrell would have passed both of them :/

The race that introduced the world to one Ayrton Senna.

  • starguy321 3 months ago

And by this era I mean 1976-84

  • starguy321 3 months ago

Personally I think Jackie Stewart is the greatest driver of them all. This era I would say Lauda as Senna has a lot to learn. Senna is more early 90′s.

Yes,but do not forget Donington. If You say Michael the no.1,ok,it’s Your opinion. For me Ayrton the no.1.I love Schumi absolutely, but he is just 2nd for me.

maybe even for me, just cause Senna had greatest passion for F1 and lived for it. But arguably maybe Schumacher is the greatest of them all. Schumacher drove from 91 up to 06 which is exactly 16 seasons, from which he won 7 titles 91 wins and 68 poles. The return with Mercedes was nothing else but pure love towards the sport and passion the best still no.1, but he failed, at the age of 40ty …. he is ultimate drivers driver. And i cannot say how anxious i am to see any of these today at his age

Never miss with Ayrton Senna.Michael just 2nd after him.Michael wins 7 WDC,Senna just 3? Senna drive on 11 seasons,Michael drive on 22 seasons with the Ferrari test driving…

how they can stop a race for a reason that happened after this race? no logic at all

@flipsidedogchop prost was great he is 4 time world champion but Senna is better than him. As Schumacher perhaps than both of them

I’m far to young too remember this era of formula 1 but this video gives me a greater appreciation for the history of the sport.Thank you for uploading this :)

Senna is a beast period but bellof is the beastest in my opinion

  • Cristobal Alv. Pal. 3 months ago

Well, yeah, but never in that way

  • maxeramen 3 months ago

Thank you so much for this! So hard to get anything F1 related here in the states. I’m willing to pay top dollar but the opportunity just doesn’t exist.. :(

The Toleman of 1984 was a pretty good car with not brilliant Turbo unit in the back of it, Senna did have a good chassis to play with in 84.

  • randalph 3 months ago

    very insightful.thank you lol

  • Davi Mourão 3 months ago

Toleman was the worst car on the grid. Nuff said.

  • Davi Mourão 3 months ago

He sure would have made it one way or another.

It’s probably been uploaded in the wrong aspect ratio. 16:9 instead of 4:3.

  • damob351 3 months ago

Great video, totally enjoyed this. Especially (with total respect to the great James Hunt & iconic Murray Walker) enjoyed when commentary ceased for the few laps with engine sounds only, showing and hearing a classic battle. Maybe they should do that these days too. Thanks for uploading also!!

    nice up-load, thank you…

I’m fully aware what ‘retarded’ refers to but I still have to smirk when I hear it

  • kris lambert 3 months ago

james hunt should of carried on racing…what a driver!

  • f1since08 3 months ago

Thanks, but how did the uploader continue showing all of the race?

  • Ellemerob 3 months ago

Very sad as it was that crash was totally Bellof’s fault.Totally ridiculous passing attempt.

  • Ellemerob 3 months ago

The BBC did use to cut transmission fairly often back then.I remember numerous times when they only showed the first few laps then showed cricket, horse jumping or horse racing or whatever then returned to the race for the last few laps. Use to drive me demented.

Why is the video squashed flat?

  • Vindicatedly 3 months ago

Wow. Sector 3 was way too different before. And that chicane after the tunnel was non-existent during those times. Now I’m having some F1 history lessons.

  • fdmzoppp13 3 months ago

actually senna wouldve retired a lap or two after the race ended with suspension failure anyway according to wikipedia, so you both need to do your homework.

  • GoteeDevotee 3 months ago

In the good old days GP got five mins in grandstand and half-an-hour of highlight on BBC2 at 11.30pm or after the golf had finished.

  • GoteeDevotee 3 months ago

    Eight. Do your homework. 1988.

  • Corvair777 3 months ago

    Hows that wall senna?

  • f1since08 3 months ago

What happened at the point where it temporarily switches to Grand Stand for the other big event in France? Did the BBC cut transmission or what?

  • Mike M 3 months ago

Should have won in 1988 too. Was absolutely caning it until McLaren broke his concentration and told him to slow down about 8 laps from the end. (Senna claimed later he was actually going so well, he was unaware of consciously driving the car)

All time classic race. Nothing like Monaco – especially when the heavens open.

    Tempos bons…que não voltam mais…

James Hunt- ‘This is what i would call french timing to put it politely’, seems like like people were aware of the politics that went on back then.

  • Eddie Magpie 3 months ago

same opinion here,,, great race no mater what politics were going on.. No amount of debate, arguing or just plain name calling is going to change anything (especially other posters opinions,,) Enjoying the race for what it was, one of the toughest tracks in the world made treacherous by the weather and STILL the racing was great. A true classic no matter which driver/team are favoured.. Formula 1 Grand Prix at it’s finest.

    Nerdcube’s nightmare.

  • OmniZeitgeist 3 months ago

I knew Senna won a record 6 Grand Prix of Monaco. Now I know it should have been 7. That guy was God-on-wheels when it rained…wow, the Master!
